Following a sold-out world-premiere production at the American Repertory Theater in Cambridge, Massachusetts, the new musical, Waitress, composed by Sara Bareilles, will start Broadway previews 25 March 2016, and open on 24 April at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre with Tony winner Jessie Mueller in the lead.
Waitress will be one of the last shows to open this season before the Tony Awards cutoff date of 26 April. The Brooks Atkinson is currently home to the hit revival of Spring Awakening, which is playing a limited engagement there.
Jessie has starred in the ART production and will reprise her role on Broadway; the rest of the cast is to be announced.
Waitress, according to the press notes, is about “Jenna, a waitress and expert pie maker, stuck in a small town and a loveless marriage. When a baking contest in a nearby county offers her a chance at escape, Jenna must weigh her commitments against a rare shot at freedom and recognition. Her customers, co-workers, and the town’s handsome new doctor all offer her conflicting recipes for happiness – but Jenna must ultimately decide for herself.”
