Waitress the Musical is ‘opening up’ in Australia in 2020. The musical, with a book by Jessie Nelson, music by Sara Bareilles, choreography by Lorin Latarro and direction by Diane Paulus, will play in the Lyric Theatre, Sydney. Theatre producer John Frost announced the production as a Sydney exclusive.
Productions of Chicago and Saturday Night Fever will also come to Sydney in 2019, opening at the Lyric Theatre and Capitol Theatre respectively.
John Frost said: “I am so excited to bring these three wonderful, diverse productions to light up Sydney stages and thrill audiences. Waitress has become a huge hit on Broadway and across the US, receiving four Tony nominations and six Drama Desk nominations. With music by Grammy nominee Sara Bareilles, Waitress has quickly become the new ‘must see’ musical.”
The show, the first Broadway musical in history to have women in the four top creative team spots, received Tony nominations for Best Music, Best Original Score, Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical and Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Musical and the album received a nomination for a Grammy.
