Det Ny Teater in Copenhagen are ‘opening up’ for Waitress next year. The show will star singer Maria Lucia Rosenberg Heiberg in the lead role.
Maria Lucia returns to the stage after her maternity leave when it premieres on 11 March 2021.
The focal point of the musical is the talented pie baker Jenna Hunterson, who will be played by Maria Lucia Rosenberg Heiberg.
Waitress premiered on Broadway in 2016 and instantly became a huge success. It received four Tony nominations and one Grammy nomination for Sara Bareilles’ music. Since then, the musical has played at the West End in London in 2019, where it has been nominated for the awards for ‘Best New Musical’ and ‘Best Original Score’ at the Olivier Awards.
In 2011, Maria Lucia received a Reumert for ‘Best Singer’ for her role as Elphaba in Wicked at the Det Ny Teater. In addition to Maria Lucia, the cast for Waitress includes several previous Reumert winners, including Mads M. Nielsen, who in 2011 received a Reumert for ‘Best Male Leading Role’, and Henrik Lund, who the following year received a Reumert for ‘Best Male Supporting Role’ for his role as Cosmo Brown in Singin’ In The Rain – also at Det Ny Teater.
They both participate in Waitress together with Lars Mølsted. In 2017, he received a Reumert for ‘Best Singer’ for his role as Quasimodo in Fredericia Theater’s The Hunchback Of Notre Dame. Mølsted will play Dr. Jim Pomatter in Waitress. In addition, Monica Isa Andersen and Sara Gadborg will play as diner colleagues Dawn and Becky, with Jesper Paasch as Jenna’s husband Earl.
WAITRESS is staged by Englishwoman Lisa Kent, who has previously been behind major hits such as Beauty and the Beast, The Producers, Mary Poppins and Wicked at The New Theater. The set design is also created by Englishman Terry Parsons, who has also created set design for a number of The New Theatre’s great successes over the past 15 years.
