Take It From An Old Man

‘Take It From An Old Man’ is a solo song performed by Joe in Waitress, encouraging Jenna to enter the Springfield pie contest and “bake to win,” so she can escape her troubles. A studio recording of Sara Bareilles performing the song has not yet been released; Dakin Matthews‘s version is used on the Original Broadway Cast Recording.

During June Squibb‘s run on Broadway, where Joe was recast as Josie, the song was renamed ‘Take It From An Old Ma’am’.

Lyrics

Take it from an old man
Time’s just sand slippin’ past
We wanna hold it in our hands
But no one ever sees what falls through the cracks
Take it from an old man
My mistakes have made me
And I am what I am
And though I don’t believe in silver linings

I believe that there’s something in you
(I believe in you)

Something good is tryin’ to break through
(Ooh)

You might have to fight the good fight
And when you think you can’t
You can

Take it from an old man
Take it from an old man

The days don’t stretch any longer
They’ve left tracks upon my skin
But I reckon made me stronger

But I believe there’s something in you
Something you should be seeing to
Bet it all on yourself at least one time

Cause honey win or lose
(Win or lose)
It’s one hell of a ride
(It’s one hell of a ride)

And if you lack the strength of your own
Honey hold out your hands
And take it from an old man

ART Version

Take it from an old man
Time’s just sand slippin’ past
We wanna hold it in our hands
But no one ever sees what falls through the cracks
Take it from an old man
My mistakes have made me
And I am what I am
And though I don’t believe in silver linings

I believe that there’s something in you
(I believe in you)

Something good is tryin’ to break through
(Ooh)

You might have to fight the good fight
And when you think you can’t
You can

Take it from an old man
Take it from an old man

The days don’t stretch any longer
They’ve left tracks upon my skin
But I reckon made me stronger

And I wish I could gift that to you
Help you see the world like I do
Bet it all on yourself at least one time

Cause honey win or lose
(Win or lose)
It’s one hell of a ride
(It’s one hell of a ride)

I believe there’s something in you
Something you should be seeing too
And when you lack the strength of your own
Honey hold out your hands
And take it from an old man
(Ooh)

Cause when you think you can’t
You can
Take it from an old man
