Lorin Latarro

Lorin Latarro is the choreographer of Waitress the Musical.

Lorin was in 14 Broadway shows as a performer, including Fosse, Swing!, A Chorus Line and Twyla Tharp’s Movin’ Out. She danced for Robert Wilson, Martha Graham and MOMIX.

An Associate Artist at Bucks County Playhouse under Robyn Goodman and Alex Fraser, Lorin has worked on shows including Company, The Rocky Horror Show, Ain’t Misbehavin’, World Goes ‘Round, Buddy and A Taste of Things To Come. Lorin is the Associate Choreographer of American Idiot and The Met’s Rigoletto.

Lorin is a Dancebreak recipient, an Astaire Award nominee, a Gates Foundation Arts Advocate in Africa and India and is the founder of ART = AMMO: Artists Against Gun Violence, seen on PBS, Rachel Maddow and in the NYTimes. Lorin is a BFA graduate and adjunct professor at The Juilliard School. Art=Ammo brings performance flash mobs to different areas of the US to encourage people to stop and truly think about their stance on gun violence in the United States.

On Waitress, Lorin said: “The first time I heard Sara Bareilles’ music, I closed my eyes and knew what to do with the piece. It just taught me how to make Waitress move. I read in the New York Times about the importance of daydreaming. And I said, ‘I know what to do with the show now. We have to see her daydream. We have to see her daydream about having the courage to leave her husband.’ And then the ensemble just became the extension of that. Sometimes they were the obstacles to her leaving and sometimes they were helping her leave – throwing her a suitcase. Sometimes they were actually part of her doubt, and almost stopping her. Other times, they were there just to hyperbolise her emotional state. The small breaths and the small head rolls, those things were just there to theatricalize something she was feeling inside. It all came from gestures.

“I was interested actually in the sensuality of food because this woman is clearly a sensual woman and she’s having this hot affair with a doctor. I wanted the food to sort of be a metaphor for sex. I wanted it to have this tactile feel. That’s how the props came to life. And they’re real. One of my biggest pet peeves is the fake-ity fake. I was like, ‘Why are we not pouring real coffee? We’re in a diner!’”
