Copenhagen

Copenhagen, Denmark received the Scandinavian premiere of Waitress The Musical at Det Ny Teater (‘the new theatre’), one of the country’s largest theatres.

Announced during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in May 2020, Det Ny Teater planned to open Waitress the Musical to the public on 11 March 2021, however due to COVID-19 restrictions, the show was delayed until 7 April 2021 and then 6 May 2021. The set and staging are non-replica, making this the third non-replica international production (after Manila in November 2018 and Buenos Aires in April 2019 and Warsaw, which was always meant to be third but ended up premiering later in the same month, due to COVID-19 restrictions).

The show was translated into Danish by Kenneth Thordal, one of the most established English work translators in Denmark. His most recent translation work includes The Book of Mormon, South Park, Eminem’s ‘8 Mile’ and more.

Waitress in Copenhagen had its press premiere on 9 May 2021, to critical acclaim. Due to the delays in opening, as a result of COVID-19 restrictions, the show ran for just over 2 weeks in Denmark; Det Ny Teater said they hope there is an opportunity for the show to come back to the theatre later.

Following in the footsteps of the original production, the show features a female director, Lisa Kent, born and educated in the UK. Lisa has worked extensively in the West End as both a choreographer and director, including at Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre. She has recently directed Hair in Oslo, Norway, Hedwig and the Angry Inch in Bergen, Norway, as well as Billy Elliot, Beauty and the Beast, Singin’ In The Rain, Mary Poppins, Wicked and Les Misérables for Det Ny Teater.
